Questions everyone asks

Do I need a visa?

Most nationalities need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), applied for online before departure. Rules and fees change — always check the official ETA portal for your country before booking flights.

When is the best month to visit?

There isn’t one — there are two answers. The south-west (Galle, Mirissa, the hill country) is at its best December–April; the east (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) takes over April–September. Pick your coast, not your month.

How do we get around?

A car with a driver for door-to-door comfort, trains for the two famous lines (Kandy–Ella and the coast), buses for the adventurous and the patient. Most travellers mix all three.

Is it safe for solo travellers?

Sri Lanka is generally warm, low-hassle and used to solo visitors. Check your government’s current travel advisory before you go, as with anywhere, and keep the ordinary big-city street sense switched on.

What money should I carry?

Sri Lankan rupees. Cards work well in cities and hotels; carry cash for rural areas, tuk-tuks, small guesthouses and every plate of kottu you’ll want.
